Molokai

Moloka'i is often called the most Hawaiian of all the islands. There are a few reasons it has this reputation. First of all, a higher percentage of full-blooded Hawaiians live here than on any other island except Ni'ihau. Second, the way of life on the island remains almost untouched by modernization or commercialization. Time marches on in Moloka'i, but it does it so slowly and gracefully as to be almost unnoticeable. The third reason has to do with the attitude of people on the island. Almost all of them display a genuine "Aloha Spirit" that is impossible to find in any other place in the world. People aren't just polite on this island; they're warm. Shopkeepers aren't professional; they're genuinely interested in being helpful. It's an amazing thing to behold, especially for mainland city dwellers, and it is the reason why Molokai's nickname is 'The Friendly Isle'.

Unlike O'ahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island, Moloka'i does very little advertising. It does not have any regular tourist publications, and only the largest businesses are registered with the Convention and Visitor's Bureau. It prefers to ... more

If you are looking for wild parties.....the friendly Island ils not for you. It is quite and the local are nice people. How do I know...I grow up and went to school at Molokai High. Molokai still look as if it was during the sixties..unspoiled. Look at Honolulu its so crowded and the traffic is bad. The Garden Isle is great and untouched by greedy developers. So do go and fly to the other Islands they are great!!... More

Molokai is not the Hawaii of the magazines or the tourist trade. It is however a great place to go to meet the Hawaiian people. If you are going there as a tourist and looking for 'glitz' it is probably not for you. If you want to spend a few quiet days 'away from it all' in a beautiful setting then it might be just what you are looking for. The residents do not cater to the tourist trade but they are not unfriendly. If you want to see the real Hawaii go to the Hotel Molokai for dinner on Friday night and listen to the local musicians. If you are fortunate Lono may be performing. For more local flavor shop at the Saturday farmer's/flea market in town. It's a beautiful place and the road to the south and eastern end of the island makes the road to Hana on Maui look like a major highway by comparison! It is a quiet island with little of the tourist attractions of the better known islands - which is also it's charm.
