Santa Fe

Despite its rich and sometimes turbulent past, Santa Fe was slow to grow. Until 20 years ago, it was not a major city by any standard. Since then, the population has grown from around 40,000 to over 60,000. Zoning laws from the 1950s, written by visionary civic leaders, helped the growing city retain the enchanting charm that makes it one of the most fascinating in the country.

Plaza

Nowhere is this charm more evident than on Santa Fe Plaza. Shaded by 150 year-old cottonwood trees, this grassy square is surrounded by historic buildings. The ancient adobe structures, with their gentle corners and irregular earth-tone walls, bake in the soft light of the New Mexico sun. The hustle of the modern city teems to the south, but on the Plaza life slows, and the locals affectionately call their home "the Land of MaƱana."

On the north side of the Plaza is the Palace of the Governors, the oldest public building in the country. Across from this grand structure, Pueblo artisans sell the fruits of their labors on colorful blankets at the Santa Fe Indian Market. The remaining three sides of... more

Just returned from 5 days in Santa Fe and it was outstanding. Great weather in early October. Santa Fe Plaza, Canyon Road and the surrounding areas provide continuing opportunities to enjoy art, history and great restaurants. On the road, must sees include the Tesuque Village Market, the Bandelier National Monument and a ride up the "High Road" from Santa Fe to Taos. Along the "High Road" a stop at Santuario de Chimayo, a church built between 1813 and 1816 is a must. At ... More

At the end of the trip in Taos, a visit to the Taos Pueblo provides a great glimpse of what life was like almost a century ago.

My wife and I traveled last October to Santa Fe NM for some down time and to take in the sights for five days. We weren't disappointed. My wife and I traveled last October to Santa Fe NM for some down time and to take in the sights for five days. We weren't disappointed. Being able to stay at a friend's second home in the mountains just 15 minutes away from downtown was an added bonus. Downtown Santa Fe is full of Indian and Hispanic culture. We're not ones for tourist traps so we took a walking tour of the art gallaries handcrafted beadwork silverwork clothing and leather goods and furniture. In nearly every shop we entered we were warmly greeted and told how we had come \at the perfect time of year\. I whole-heartedly agree with that. Temperatures weren't much over the mid to high 70's during the day and got into the mid 40's at night. The tourist season is essentially over by this time of the year so we could browse the shops and talk with the owners and/or artists at length. They were happy to oblige. The fall sun casts a beautiful glow on the adobe structures of most of the core downtown area. Some of the best restaurants are down little alley ways and hidden behind larger buildings. It helps to ask the locals for the type of cuisine you're looking for. Some of the restaurants - at least one was 5 star! perhaps more - are known only by the locals or seasoned travelers to Santa Fe. Overall it is an enjoyable time in a rustic setting with world class shopping sights and dining. Enjoy the mountain air expansive skies and the beauty of the desert.
