BLOCK ISLAND, RI

Block Island is a wonderful New England island that seems caught in a time warp. Large turn of the century hotels and inns dot the hilly landscape my favorite of which is the Atlantic Inn which sits up on a hill overlooking the town and the sound beyond. It has a sweeping front porch and they serve drinks during the early evening as people congregate on it to watch the sunset. There is also an animal farm right down the hill with some exotic animals including Llamas. Block Island is tiny (3-4 miles at most) and you can bike across it pretty easily. Its also great for jogging thought a little hilly. On the East side of the island there are bluffs that drop dramatically to the sea. Best of all are the many beaches and the diversity (some calm and good for you children some with heavy surf for the more adventurous). I recommend leaving your car at the ferry dock and staying either in the town or within walking distance as you really don't need a car on the island a bike is fine. Also there are hiking trails that criss cross the island and we found blackberries on one of our hikes.
