We spent 3 days in Verona between a couple of cruises July. Lovely area and an easy commute by train to both Milan and Venice. L'Arena is its focal point. Like an intact Coliseum it dominates a square surrounded by sidewalk cafes gardenselegant buildings and shops. Verona is the site of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and while being fiction the city does have a building that was home to a version of the \Capulets\ and it is must-see destination for tourists who queue up to pose from its imposing balcony over the charming courtyard below. Small \trains\ are popping up in European cities these days and I took one in Verona for an easy tour of the city and its other points of notice. The 1st 2 nights we stayed at a hotel advertised as being near the airport. It was not. However they had a great \Romance\ package which included dinner for two (set menu but it was wonderful) a very large and clean room and bath a welcome package including a bottle of local wine and free transporation between the airport and Verona (about 15 mins. away) The name of the property is Hotel Montemezzi. We stayed there 2 nights then transitioned over to the Hotel Giberti in the city center an easy walk to both the L'Arena area & the train station. The Giberti's room was a little smaller but clean with a great marbled bath. There is a local supermarket nearby called Pam where we bought fabulous rolls and salamis instead of eating out as this was the last night before boarding the cruise ship for our 2nd cruise! One of the days we took the train to Vicenza a glorious medieval town with fantastic architecture and museums such as the Olympic (check out its beautiful grounds and statuary). We then took the train to Pescheria del Garda a lakeside town on Lago de Garda with a real resort-y feel to it. A real must if you are there in the summer is the Opera at L'Arena. The acoustics are incredible and under the moonlight it doesn't get any better!

Verona is absolutely beautiful! Juliet's balcony is here .. along with one of the oldest arenas of all time (it's older than the Colliseum!) When visiting see an amazing opera at the arena ans stroll the pink marble streets with shopping that rivals NYC's 5th ave and Rome's Spanish Steps.. A must visit town in a gorgeous country!... More
