If you like being the only person on the most spectacular and pristine beaches ever, swimming and snorkeling off the beach, kayak trips through the Mangroves, along the coast, the bio luminescent bay, land and sea life, wild horses, great restaurants ( local and exotic food for $20 pp to $100 if you try hard), and great bars for all ages and people who know how to relax , go to Vieques. If your going to make a fashion statement, play golf or hang by the pool or to achieve some kind of travel prowess stay away Vieques is not for you. This is a place which is what it is, do almost nothing but party, relax on the beach hike, bike and love it.
Sure there is some petty theft but where can you go where their isn't. It only takes some common sense to avoid it. Comment about settling fights absolutely rascist and can under stand and appreciate that person not coming back. Wife and I have gone for 3 straight years and are in love with the place. Rent a house with a great view sunsets etc...Fish and wildlife patrols and provide friendly advice. If you like resorts a big W is coming but they are really all the same. Stay on the main island at the Conquistador, eat stock tourist food and never leave the place and see nothing while putting up with some pretentious jackass or someones unruly kids. Nothing pretentious about island. We love meeting people from throughout the states (Miinnesota, Missouri, Illinois and Michigan this year as well) and the locals have all been friendly. We even enjoyed a visit to the Sat night cock fights where we were welcome. Pack a few pair of shorts some swimwear sandals water shoes a dozen t-shirts and you are done. Kayaking a great experience and you can discover the place on your own. I laugh at the bomb comments. Those areas aren't open to the public and you'll never give it a thought. It has its problems, garbage being one of them in isolated spots, but if you can't have a good time on Vieques something is wrong with you.
