Washington DC is home to the President of the United States of America, called The White House. When considering Washington DC hotels, it's important to take into account proximity to public transportation and the Metro subway. A seemingly far-away hotel can be only a Metro stop away from major museums, where most have free admission. Most attractions and hotels are located in the Northwest side of the city, which is said to be the safest area.

To find moderately-priced Washington DC hotels, avoid traveling during major events and conventions. The lowest rates are often found on the weekends, especially in late summer and winter.

Popular DC neighborhoods include Capitol Hill, home of the Library of Congress and Supreme Court, beautifully historic Georgetown, and Adams Morgan, which is packed with globally-diverse restaurants and bars.

Budgets aside, here are some of the most popular Washington DC hotels:

The Sofitel is conveniently located at the corner of Lafayette Square, bordering the White House. The Mall is located a few blocks away from the Capitol. The Smithsonian Museum is within walking distance.

Centrally located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, Hotel Madera is a classy boutique hotel offering easy access to the Metro and only a 10 minute walk to George Washington University.

Housed in a 1903 landmark building, the Willard InterContinental Hotel offers views of the Washington Monument and is just steps away from the Mall and the White House. The hotel is pure elegance with a lobby ensconced in marble and oak.

If you're looking for two rooms in one, consider staying at Washington Suites. These expansive, oversized rooms are situated near the Metro and the shops and restaurants of Georgetown.

Hotel Monticello is an all-suite European-style hotel located in historic Georgetown and is minutes from the White House.

Washington DC has also recently been named #5 on the Best Cities for Singles 2009 list.
