Xiamen dates back to 1394 and this house of history details every century. From the city's beginnings under the Ming dynasty to Japanese occupation in the late 1800s to the tumultuous Chairman Mao Red Book years, its story is all documented. More than 1,000 items pack the museum and include painted porcelains, wooden rifles, scrolls, photos and printing presses. The building itself, with its white pillars and red dome, is an architectural gem, blending in nicely with the island's reputation for architectural genius.
