Overview
As early as the 6th Century BCE a fortress existed at this location, but the walls and towers that remain today are Roman in origin. During that era, the ground level was ten meters (33 feet) lower and the Nile was 440 meters (1444 feet) closer, gently lapping the walls of the fort. It is interesting to see how the fortifications were incorporated by the Christian community. One tower forms the base of the Church of St George, another has been partially excavated, while the Hanging Church was built between two gate towers.
