Overview
The northern tip of Gezira island is the district of Zamalek, once a British neighborhood which miraculously retains a residential feel despite the dense population. The area is popular with westerners and other expatriates. Grab a map of Zamalek in Al Diwan Bookstore before heading out to explore. Fair Trade Egypt is a particularly nice shop in which to buy high quality, handmade souvenirs. For the mall rats, a visit to Al Yamama Center may satisfy the urge to spend, with over eight floors of shops. Zamalek's multitude of popular Western-style bars and nightclubs are a big attraction. Most of the island is dominated by the Gezirah Sporting Club, a private sporting club restricted to those who can afford the pricey membership fees.
