Altydgedacht, on the slopes of the fertile Tygerberg Hills, is one of the oldest wine farms in the Cape with an unbroken tradition of wine-making over the last 290 years. The cellar was built in 1705 and old inventories show that the farm sold wine to wholesalers in 1730. However, the first wines to appear under the Altydgedacht Estate label were released as recently as 1985. History is tangible on this beautiful estate. The farm has been in the Parker family for five generations, thanks to the courage and determination of their women. The widowed grandmother, Daisy, ran it herself, while her three sons were away in World War Two. For the last five decades, Jean Parker, widowed in 1954 when both her sons were under four years old, has run the farm, becoming one of the South Africa's first female wine makers.
