Café Balducci, Cape Town

Sleek and stylish, Café Balducci is a class act near the water's edge where you can feast on a lavish three-course dinner or linger on a light luncheon. If it were in New York city, you'd expect it to be Donna Karan's hangout! Clad in gleaming cherrywood, oxblood leather and Irish guild fabrics, it's hard to believe, perhaps, that Ian Halfon of the St Elmo's Pizza chain owns Café Balducci. There's a gorgeous long bar or deli and sharp, friendly service provided by service ambassadors. Surprisingly hearty fare, though there are light meals (ciabatta etc) and good choices for vegetarians. Try the braised oxtail with mash and a rich red wine sauce, honey-mustard chicken, smoked salmon pasta or the Gorgonzola, avo and walnut pasta.
