Johannesburg is recognized the world over as Egoli, the city of gold, and many monuments have been erected to celebrate this treasure. George Harrison Park is the historic site where the main gold reef was discovered by George Harrison and George Walker in 1886. There is a view site that overlooks a genuine mine shaft where the gold reefs can be clearly seen. A stamp battery has also been erected in the park. Parking and admission is free.
