Globe Theatre, Johannesburg

The original "Globe" was in downtown, turn of the century Johannesburg; a small city that was starting to grow out of dirt into diamonds and gold. This was the only theatre that remained open through both the Boer and the First World Wars. Originally built by impresario Barney Barnato, it was used by Mahatma Gandhi for launches and speeches during his early years in this country. Rebuilt recently at the Gold Reef City Casino (seven minutes away from the city center), this theatre has emerged as a charming, if small place, complete with velvet and rustic murals.
