Housing 143 works of the famed sculptor Edoardo Villa, this museum is a part of the burgeoning art movement within the University of Pretoria. Villa is an Italian-born sculptor who came to Pretoria as a prisoner of war after World War II. Over the years, he donated his works to the University, which together came to be known as the Edoardo Villa Museum. It opened in 1995 on his 80th birthday, within the Old Merensky Library. Its building itself is magnificent, thanks to the beautiful art deco style adopted by the architect Gerard Moerdyk. The works at the museum display the sheer genius of their creator, whose talent shone out in every form and every material. The museum is a study in art for students, artists and the general public.
