J.G Strijdom Square was unveiled in 1972 by the widow of the late Prime Minister of South Africa. Built on the grounds of an old market place, it is home to a bronze bust of the Prime Minister Advocate J.G Stridjom, sculptured by Coert Steynberg. Nearby is a statuary group of charging horses above a fountain - a symbol of the republic striving for independence. Present South African President, Thabo Mbeki, held his inauguration dinner at the square last year.
