The Pretoria Train Station is looking a little forlorn these days following the events of February 2001, when rioters set fire to and burnt down the roof of this beautiful 1910 Sir Herbert Baker-designed building. Refurbishment is in the pipeline, and the station, a national monument, continues to operate – its mainstay being Metro commuter lines to Johannesburg and other nearby destinations. Mainliner Train services ply the long distance routes in South Africa, including destinations like Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban. Mainliners are comfortable (if spartan), and very reasonably priced. Those lucky enough to afford the world-famous Blue Train will probably begin or end their journey here, staying the night across the road at the Victoria Hotel, which dates back to 1892. Long haul buses also depart from Pretoria Train Station.
