The Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) Gymnasium has seen action for decades, but was revamped for the 2008 Beijing Olympics for use as a volleyball venue. Among the additions were three layers of thermal insulation, which serve to reduce the noise of rain along with keeping the interior temperature constant. The 22,632-square meter (243,500-square foot) facility was also refitted with a skylight, and a hi-tech roof. Post-Olympics, the venue will remain under the purview of BIT and will function as a sports and cultural center.
