First built in the 1990s, the Laoshan Mountain Bike Course was made shorter and more challenging for its use in the 2008 Beijing Olympics upon the request of the IOC. The course is one of the most environmentally-friendly "venues" of the Olympics, utilizing the natural landscape of Laoshan Mountain, and employing bags of soil for reinforcement rather than metal or concrete. There has also been a continuing reforestation project on site contributing even further to the theme of a "Green Olympics" The 4.6-kilometer (2.6-mile) course will be open to the public post-Olympics.
