Overview

The Jamia Masjid, or the Shelley Street Mosque, is located off Hong Kong's famed Central Mid-Levels Escalator. This mosque, which is the oldest in Hong Kong, is featured on the special administrative region's heritage trail and is preserved as a historical landmark. The original structure was built in 1850, though it was rebuilt and expanded in size in 1915 to accommodate the growing numbers of worshipers. Today, this beautiful mosque, which stands within a tranquil courtyard and is an exponent of the Indo-Islamic school of architecture, can comfortably accommodate 400 people. The mosque welcomes visitors of all faiths outside prayer times, though the administrators of the mosque require visitors to be modestly attired at all times. -Anjeeta Nayar
