Gajah Mada was the chief minister for King Hayam Wuruk, ruler of the Majapahit Kingdom in the 14th century. This prominent leader reigned from 1331 to 1364 and was believed to have brought prosperity to the Hindu Javanese kingdom prior to the penetration of Islam. The impressive statue depicts him as a muscular and strong-willed man. Its prime location ensures that most visitors will encounter it sooner or later during their travels in Jakarta.
