Izumi Shikibu (Joshin-in Temple)
Shinkyokoku-dori Rokkaku-sagaru, Kyoto, JapanMap
Neighborhood: Nakagyo-ku
Overview
This temple is dedicated to a famous female poet, Izumi Shikibu. Although she is also associated with the Tohoku-in (play in the Noh repertoire by the same name), this is the temple which pays homage to her. She was born in 976 and between her two marriages, two princes were her lovers. Prince Atsumichi's [981-1007] death elicited material for many of her waka (31-syllable poems), which totaled nearly 1,500. Another of her themes was Buddhism, particularly the aspects of renunciation and enlightenment.
