Popular with students for its low prices, late opening and proximity to Kyoto University, Tipitina's is named after the New Orleans club. Soul and R&B music plays non-stop from the radio, or, if you do not like that, there is a juke box full of (did you guess it?) soul and R&B. The southern theme does not stop there: gumbo is on the menu, which is conveniently written in English; ask for it. The menu is extensive. Spaghetti (enough for two people) with salmon and mushroom cream sauce is delicious; eight-inch pizzas are worth a try too; octopus, olive oil and lemon is highly ordered and a big fresh fruit plate would be a real treat. Also served are very good cocktails. For beer drinkers there is the domestic Asahi, but also imported Hoegaarden.
