Overview
A national historic site, the Tekijuku is housed in a typical merchant's residence from the Edo Period, and is Japan's only remaining school for studying Western science in Dutch. The Tekijuku was founded by Koan Ogata in 1838 and remained under his management until 1862. Ogata was a great educator and scholar in Dutch and medical science. Tekijuku is an important national cultural asset and features a museum that provides valuable resources for people interested in the history of Japan.
