The Aioi is famous for its authentic reproductions of the first ice creams ever sold in Japan. The first ice cream parlor in Japan was located a few meters from the present site of Aioi. A statue called "Taiyo no Boshizo," or Mother and Child in the Sun, marks the spot where Richard Risley opened the first ice-cream parlor in 1866. The taste and consistency of the original ice cream were like sherbet. At first only foreigners enjoyed the refreshing treat, but the Japanese quickly learned to love ice cream as well. In 1869 the first Japanese ice cream parlor opened. A local firm has reproduced the original ice creams from the original recipes and calls them Basamichi Aisu. The Aioi sells all four flavors of Basamichi Aisu.
