Located at St. John's Hill about 3 kilometers from Malacca town, this fort was formerly a private Portuguese chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. During the third quarter of the 18th century, it was reconstructed by the Dutch and converted into a fort. Notice how the gun embrasures are positioned such that they face inland. This is because Malacca was always attacked from the hinterland instead of from the sea.
