It's hard to imagine how this wildly commercialized strip of scenic beach front could have fared as a fabled haunt of hippies in the 1970s. The coast is filled with the clunky expanses of concrete, the unmistakable edifice of mass tourism. A dozen upscale resorts and lesser quality shops and stands betray over 20 years of packaged tourism designed specifically for Japanese travelers during the bubble economy era. A nocturnal bazaar of trinket shops, budget restaurants, rowdy bars and discos have now been added to the list of unforgettable experiences on offer at Batu Ferringhi.
