Overview
In 1395, the Mongol conqueror Tamerlane was approaching Moscow. Consequently, the highly revered Icon of the Virgin Mary was brought from Vladimir to protect the city. Tamerlane then dreamt of angels with flaming swords pointed at him and was so scared that he ordered an immediate retreat. In memory of this miracle, the was founded at the place where the icon was received. In 1677, a splendid white stone cathedral was built here. It contains beautiful, well-preserved frescoes. The icon itself is now in the Tretiakov gallery.
