A director of the Bolshoi Theatre, Boris Pokrovskii, founded the theatre in 1972. Until 1998, the theatre was located on Leningradskii prospect in a former cinema theatre, but now has a new stage at Nikolskaia Ulitsa besides the original. The core of the theatre's repertoire consists of lesser-known classical works and contemporary operas. They also perform unique one-man shows, video-music shows, comedies and, for children, clown and puppet shows.
