Tabakov Theater-Studio began life in 1974 as a children's theatre school. Various notable teachers, including celebrated Russian actor Oleg Tabakov, taught high school students the art of theater. After two years Tabakov would invite the most talented students to study in the more senior State Institute of Theater where he was also a teacher. In 1978, Tabakov and his students started regular performances in the cellar of the apartment building. By 1987 the group had managed to get more space for performances in the same building, and the Tabakov Theater-Studio was officially opened. The theater's repertoire consists largely of minor Russian classics. The theater often goes on tour, and has played to crowds in USA, Japan, Germany, France, Canada and Israel.
