One day in November 1921, a play was presented in a private residence on the Arbat under the direction of Evgenii Vakhtangov. That day became the birthday of a new theatre that later acquired its founder's name. Evgenii Vakhtangov is well-known in Russia as an artistically innovative theatre director. The famous play Princess Turandot became the theatre's trademark work and a kind of initiation rite for the group's budding young actors, three generations of whom have graced the theatre's stage.
