Bukit Batok Memorial is located on top of the serene Bukit Batok hill. The bloodiest battle in Singapore was fought here during World War II. In memory of the Japanese soldiers who died in the course of duty, a Japanese Syonan Shrine and a forty-foot tall memorial was built, while another memorial 10-foot high in the form of a crucifix was erected nearby for the British soldiers. After the Japanese Occupation, both the Japanese Memorial and the shrine were demolished by the British. The British Memorial, commemorative signboards and a flight of 135 concrete steps that once led to the Japanese Memorial remain as a reminder of the tragedy that once occurred here.
