Located at the National University of Singapore, the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research is one of the oldest natural history museums in Asia. Singapore s early colonial founders were impressed by the island s diverse plant and animal life, and the museum was founded in 1849 to promote biological research and understanding. The museum s collection features over 500,000 specimens, a rotating group of which are on display in the public galleries and can be viewed independently or as part of a guided tour. Visitors with a keen interest in science and nature will enjoy learning about tropical eco-systems, conservation issues, Singapore s early naturalists, and the unusual species that still inhabit Singapore like the pangolin (spiny anteater), dugong, and flying lizards. -Tanya Procyshyn
