The Read Bridge is located at the upstream end of the Singapore River, linking Clarke Quay on one side to Riverside Point on the other. The third bridge to be built on this spot, it was completed in 1931 and replaced an older bridge. Its simple green structure is more utilitarian than ornate, adorned with only four ornamental street lamps. Named after W.H.M. Read, a prominent businessman and legislator, the Read Bridge stands in the heart of the Teochew community, where once locals gathered nightly and held storytelling sessions.
