Da Guan Shan is full of huge, imposing trees that are thousands of years old. Many birds flock here, including unusual species such as green-backed tits, Formosan Yuhinas and Muller's Barbets. The reserve also features wildflowers, flying squirrels and tree frogs. The 6,390 hectare site is well maintained by the government's forestry bureau: the 3.7-kilometer-long walking trail is kept in good condition, and there are plenty of signposts and information boards. If you do not have your own transportation, joining a group tour may be the only way to reach this lovely spot.
