Huen Phen, Chiang Mai

A short jaunt from Wat Phra Sing, Huen Phen makes a lovely stop for a quick lunch on an Old City walking tour or a low-key local dinner. Huen Phen specializes in Northern style or Lanna dishes that take advantage of local produce not traditionally available in the South. The restaurant's specialty is an egg-noodle soup with a curry broth called Khao Soi which has become the signature dish of the North. While Khao Soi is abundant in Chiang Mai, Huen Phen puts a few spins on the dish that won't be found easily elsewhere, such as a version made with fish. The prices are quite low and the restaurant has just a little more ambiance than the average Thai fast food restaurant. - Scott Johnson
