North Gate Jazz Co-Op, Chiang Mai

Directly inside the Old City moat across from Chang Puak Gate is one of the most popular hang-out spots for Chiang Mai’s expats and savvy Thais. “We are a bar, but everyone just comes here for the music” says the bartender as she rushes out cocktails to jazz-goers as they start piling in. The co-op features live jazz every night from whichever jazz musician happens to be in town. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the music is usually fantastic. Tuesday nights draw the biggest crowd when the co-op hosts open mic nights. On those nights many patrons sit along the centuries old city wall and take in the vibe. North Gate Jazz is a nightlife must for anyone interested in Chiang Mai’s modern arts scene. -Scott Johnson
