Overview
In the early third century a Vietnamese army commander named Ly Ong Trong helped the Chinese emperor Tan Thuy Hoang fight off Mongolian invaders. Now an annual festival featuring three main events commemorates his deeds, held each year on the 14th to the 16th of the fourth month of the lunar calendar. A water procession brings water from the Red River to bathe his statue. A boating contest pits five neighboring villages in competition. Finally, doves are released in a display of peace and happiness.
