Abell's Kopi Tiam, Canberra

Abell's Kopi Tiam has developed a loyal, if not rapid, local following. Call it the cult of chef Abell Ong. Once you stop by for a taste, you just might become a devotee. The dining rooms like the cuisine is a mish-mash of old school and contemporary styles mixing the likes of timber tables and chairs with single tone walls in trendy deep yellow and red tones. Throw in a bit of local artwork and the setting is complete. The traditional entrees are the best bet but taking on the Chinese-Malay cuisine is worth the experiment. Sample the antipasto basket with tofu cakes and king prawns or the authentic Char Kway Teow, rice noodles and bean sprouts with chili and soy on the side.
