The French explorers discovered this area before any other Europeans and Bruni d'Entrecasteaux and his crew gave their names to many of the local towns and bays. The D'Entrecasteaux Channel is superb for sailing and throughout the year boats of all shapes and sizes can be seen exploring the pristine waterways. The deep waters also mean that large cruise ships often visit in summer. Oysters and mussels can be eaten fresh from the rocks and no fisherman goes home unhappy.
