Bakery-Warandyte (The), Melbourne

Established in 1890, this Warrandyte institution regularly has queues overflowing onto its veranda. The Bakery's popularity is due partly to its scenic location beside the Yarra River. Its gardens are bordered by gum trees and overlook the riverside Heidelberg School Artists Trail, making The Bakery a welcome rest stop for walkers. The extensive wooden playground next door is also a draw card for families. The Bakery serves traditional-style pies, pastries and breads baked in a wood-fire oven. As you'd expect in laid-back, bush-loving Warrandyte, the atmosphere is relaxed, with all seating outdoors under the trees. Open seven days of the week.
