Crown Street's Agave Restaurant provides Surry Hills with a fresh take on Mexican food, bucking the trend towards the takeaway staples of sour cream, corn chips and large helpings of cheese. Mexican-born owner Gerardo Macip Lanzagorta strives to bring authentic ingredients to his cheery restaurant, evident in dishes such as the slow-cooked pork shoulder with nopales cactus and tomatillo salsa, or chicken with mole poblano sauce (a rich, savory concoction of chilli and chocolate). Other parts of the menu may seem more familiar, like the empanadas with a spicy seafood filling, crisp tortillas topped with beans and spicy chorizo and, of course, margaritas and sangria.
