Located at the headquarters of the National Trust of Australia (NSW), the building occupies the former military hospital erected in 1815 which later served as a government school. The gallery has established a reputation for its temporary exhibition programs which focus on Australian themes. These include annual exhibitions such as the Salon des Refuses which is a selection of entries rejected for the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. One can buy Australian-made goods at the adjoining shop and then relax in the cafe.
