Featuring classic movies at weekend screenings, this is the only New Zealand cinema which features a Wurlitzer organ, often used at special screenings of silent movies, and for concerts featuring organists from all around the world. Originally in an Auckland theater until 1943, the organ was rescued from storage in Wellington in the 1970s and had to be repaired and reconstructed after being water damaged. Theater owner Jan Grefstad, who took over in 1956, runs a "one-man band", doing all tasks in the cinema (except playing the organ). He is presently writing a book about Auckland cinemas.
