Take a voyage on the "Long Harbour". From the historic French settlement of Akaroa, the 15 meter Canterbury Cat catamaran takes you to the outer edge of Banks Peninsula, where sheer cliffs plummet to the sea and rolling swells crash into the land. Nine million years ago, Akaroa Harbour was a live volcano and you can still see ancient lava flows, along with sea caves, surging kelp beds and Nikau Palm Gully: the southernmost limit for these palm trees. Hector's Dolphins ride the Cat's bow wave; seals bask above the tide line; you might even see a Little Blue Penguin.
