Overview

Dating back to 1851, this predominantly-Anglican cemetery, is the final resting place of many of Christchurch's early European settlers. Situated right in the heart of the city, along the banks of the Avon River (Otakaro), this tree-lined cemetery is a peaceful area from which to learn about the often-untimely deaths of many of New Zealand's pioneers. A map indicates where prominent people are buried, such as members of Christchurch's pioneering Deans family, whose legacy can still be seen at Deans Bush and Riccarton House.
