Floating Mountain is the intriguing, English translation, of the Maori name given to Mount Grey (Maukatere), which "floats" in the ranges that border the Waipara hinterland; the fourth largest wine region in New Zealand. The vineyard's owner and winemaker, Mark Rattray, is well respected in winemaking circles and has been a consultant winemaker to several other Canterbury wine producers. Floating Mountain, originally named Mark Rattray Vineyards, specializes in quality, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, which are exported worldwide. The 1998 Pinot Noir has received an "outstanding category" award from a prominent Australian wine magazine. See if you can catch a glimpse of Mautakere in the distance.
