Swiss Cafe, Christchurch

This is a cozy, upstairs/downstairs café located in a Spanish Mission-style shop. The ebullient owner, George, is always ready for a chat. Downstairs, tables in the wide shop window give a view of the street action. Upstairs, from quaint wooden tables, you look across the street to the wrought iron balconies and pastel shades of the buildings opposite. From the pavement tables, beneath hanging baskets, you can watch the trams rumble past. Excellent coffee, all-day breakfasts, Swiss Muesli and "the best seafood chowder in town" are served. A selection of hot soups are available, perfect for cold days. For a real Swiss experience, try the fondue.
