Overview

One of Wellington's less developed forests, Akatarawa has rewarding walks, mountain biking tracks and pleasant riverside picnic spots. There are camping sites (many beside rivers and streams) available for overnight stays, but there are no facilities such as toilets or drinking water. A great place for those who want to get away from it all. A permit is required for camping and visited by many, some parts of the forest are rugged and isolated. Keeping to the marked tracks and letting people know where you are going and when you will return are important safety measures.
