Government House, Wellington

The Government House or the official residence of the Queen's representative in New Zealand was built on the site of a former asylum. These days however the grounds are a peaceful haven in the inner city and the gardens have been lovingly restored to suitable grandeur. The current buildings replace the early residence that was demolished to make way for the Beehive-even the Queen comes second to politics! The grounds are extensive and the house itself is a two-storey mock-Elizabethan building with an extensive interior including a ballroom, 20 bedrooms and 17 bathrooms. Open for public viewing once a year.
