Québec City’s hotel scene is a combination of big-name hotels, luxurious boutique hotels and quaint smaller hotels and bed & breakfasts. Also, the ski resorts in the region, while not in the city proper, are an important part of Québec City tourism, which is one of this town’s major industries. That’s why, despite the city’s small size, you’ll find tons of accommodation options to suit every taste and budget. To have your choice of the best places to stay during peak seasons, though, it’s best to book well in advance.
Neighborhood: Haute-Ville (Upper Town) Price Range: Expensive If you’re ever wanted to shack up in a castle and be treated like royalty, this is the hotel for you. Open since 1893 (in anticipation of Québec City’s first Winter Carnival the following year), this stunning luxury property is a local landmark, nestled on a cliff overlooking the St. Lawrence River. Its romantic architecture was inspired by the Renaissance and Middle Ages. Le Château has housed the likes of Princess Grace of Monaco, Ronald Reagan, Winston Churchill, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Mythology aside, this recently renovated hotel is modern luxury, with more than 600 guest rooms, a spa, a world-class restaurant and convenient location in the Upper Town. We especially love its green initiatives, like free parking for hybrid cars.
Neighborhood: Basse-Ville (Lower Town) Price Range: Expensive Pegged by Condé Nast Traveler as one of Canada's finest hotels, this 95-room oasis of luxury combines the best of old and new. Located just steps from the Old Port in one direction and the bustling Petit Champlain district on the other, the tranquil Auberge Saint-Antoine has a gym, conference and banquet rooms, and a fabulous spa. Chic, spacious rooms are designed in soothing neutral shades, most with fireplaces, private terraces and stunning bathrooms with huge soaking tubs and heated floors. Some even have views of the St. Lawrence River. Its restaurant, Panache is one of the city's best.
Price Range: Moderate Popular with families and business travelers, this smoke-free, 102-room hotel features an onsite golf course and fabulous spa that includes an outdoor “O2 polar thermal experience.” The outdoor spa has hot and cold baths, a sauna and a fireplace lounge, and the property also has four large meeting rooms. It’s a bit of a drive from the action—10 minutes or so—but offers the convenient comforts of a familiar brand.
Neighborhood: Haute-Ville (Upper Town) Price Range: Moderate Open from early January to late March and located just a 10-minute drive from downtown Québec City, Hôtel de Glace is North America's only ice hotel. That's right, a hotel built—or sculpted, rather—out of ice. Somewhat of a novelty, this glorious ice sculpture of a hotel is probably the closest thing to an igloo most of us will ever get the chance to sleep in—that is, if igloos came with toasty Arctic sleeping bags and Nordic relaxation spas. Though it might not sound particularly appealing to count sheep in a bedroom whose temperature is permanently locked into the -3 and -5 degree Celsius range, the ice hotel experience is really quite beautiful and magical, as serene and otherworldly as sleeping inside a work of art. Or Narnia. With 36 rooms and suites (some with fireplaces, snow sculptures and private spas) the Ice Hotel features outdoor Nordic spas, a massive ice slide and optional activities like dog sledding and other adventures. Great for romantic getaways, families, weddings and special events.
Neighborhood: Basse-Ville (Lower Town) Price Range: Moderate Located in a building that was once the National Bank headquarters in a historic neighbourhood that, in the 19th century, was considered the "Wall Street of Québec," this hip little urban hotel is just steps away from the Old Port, Place Royale and Terrace Dufferin, as well as many museums. Hotel 71 offers 40
massive loft-like rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, an incredibly comfy bed, and tremendous views of the St. Lawrence River and Cap Diamant. The modern, chic property has excellent service, a lobby level café and a new fine-dining restaurant, Matto 71. Staying in tonight? You can rent a movie from the DVD library at the front desk. It even comes with popcorn.
Neighborhood: Haute-Ville (Upper Town) Price Range: Moderate Shack up in the heart of the action at this lovely little 20-room hotel built from two old houses. Hotel Sainte-Anne features an indoor garden, modern décor and a charming view of the old city. Everything is close by. Onsite restaurant Le Grill is excellent and features a sprawling outdoor terrace that enjoys shade from the sun during hot weather—thanks to its famous neighbor, Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac.
Neighborhood: Haute-Ville (Upper Town) Price Range: Moderate Open since 1870, this local institution is Québec City’s oldest hotel. As such, the Clarendon has housed Quebec celebrities and politicians throughout history, and today prides itself on its “home away from home” ambience and friendly staff. Today, 170 rooms are modern, clean and spacious, some with whirlpool bathtubs. Posh this is not, but the service is there with 24-hour concierge and room service, valet and an onsite bar with live jazz music.
Neighborhood: Saint-Roch Price Range: Moderate What do you get when you build a chic new 18-floor, 238-room design hotel in a historic city? Answer: Hotel PUR. This modern boutique made Condé Nast Traveler’s Hot List in 2009 and features an indoor pool, a health club and business and meeting services. Rooms feature wicked views, iPod docking stations, free local calls, flat-screen TVs and blackout curtains, as well as designer toiletries and all the usual three-star property bells and whistles. In a tip of the hat to modernity, free Wi-Fi is available in public areas, and the property is wheelchair accessible.
Neighborhood: Haute-Ville (Upper Town) Price Range: Budget Clean, well-located and featuring exposed brick and stone walls, this basic but charming European-style hotel has no frills—which, in this case, means no elevator, no kitchen and (in most rooms) no air conditioning. Rooms are old but charming, with a country house feel. Although guest reviews have been mixed, the price and location are right.
Neighborhood: Haute-Ville (Upper Town) Price Range: Budget This three-room bed and breakfast in an old Victorian townhouse is full of character and old-fashioned charm. Stained-glass windows and a curved staircase greet you en route to your room. Not all rooms have private baths or certain amenities, so be sure to specify your needs when booking. The breakfasts feature fresh fruits and croissants complemented by waffles, pancakes and French toast homemade by the joint’s owners. This place is very cute and popular.
